Tax Refund Theft on the Rise

Law enforcement officials have reported a dramatic rise in tax refund fraud, a trend that has accelerated partially due to the increasing use of online tax processing and partially due to new IRS policies designed to speed up refund payments, according to CNN, a racket that has already stolen billions of dollars from taxpayers nationwide.

CPA Exam Scores to be Released Earlier

Advances in computer testing for the CPA exam have brought about changes in the timing of when the scores are released, according to the AICPA. Starting fourth quarter, 2011, those whose test results are received by the AICPA within the first 20 days of the testing window are expected to get their results 10 business days after the end of day 20 in the testing window, with scores released Nov. 3.

Accounting Error Halves Groupon Revenue

Net Policy Expert Nominated to FTC

Money Launderers Turn to Prepaid Cards

Law enforcement officials are struggling to deal with the newest tool used to hide ill-gotten gains resulting from criminal activities: prepaid credit cards. Drug traffickers and other criminals have taken to using prepaid, or stored-value cards, to quickly move around money in a way that, while less glamorous, is more practical than the briefcase full of cash often seen in movies, reported the Associated Press.

One Year After Flash Crash, High Speed Trading Slowing Down

High frequency trading, the practice of using computers to conduct literally tens of thousands of trades per minute, has been seeing decelerating popularity over the past year, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. U.S. Settles Fraud Allegations In ‘India’s Enron’

India-based Satyam Computer Services Ltd. and its former auditors -- all Indian affiliates of the U.S. auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) -- settled with U.S. regulators on Tuesday for a combined $17.5 million to resolve the probe into what became known as “India’s Enron,” reported Reuters.

TIGTA: IRS Needs Better E-mail Security

Tech Company Sues the FASB for Patent Violation

FCC Adopts Net Neutrality Rules for Web Traffic

Report: Near All of NY Tax Dept. Contracts Went to IT or Banking

A recently released report from New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli shows that the majority of the contracts made by state Department of Taxation and Finance went towards banking or information technology services. Auditors examining the department’s 81 contracts for personal and miscellaneous services found that more than 98 percent of them were devoted to either banking or information technology needs. The contracts, put together, totaled about $563 million.

Apple Strong Even Without Using FASB Rule Change
